Driving 500 Miles in Mexico
We're driving from Guaymas to Mazatlan in this video, and we learn a lot about driving in Mexico during this 500 mile/750 kilometer road trip. The drive starts off peaceful enough. We learn how to watch out for the massive speed bumps that Mexico is famous for, and start recognizing all the individual vendors that greet us with homemade snacks at every speed bump. Then, without warning, we met some of the most assertive "entrepreneurs" we've ever encountered on our travels. It turns out, traveling by car has given people a whole new menu of services to offer us while we're on the road. We were really taken aback by by these kids, and Evie hated them coming into our space, but we're better prepared to deal with these situations in the future now.
Another challenge we're facing as we drive through Mexico with a dog is finding places to take Evie out to play and use the washroom. Street dogs are very common here, and we're still getting our bearings with how to ensure Evie is safe around street dogs while still being able to do dog-things. All small grassy patches and tiny parks have become our best friend as we find ways to let Evie get her energy out during these long driving days.
On the final day of this road trip to Mazatlan, we bring you along for a gas up at a full-service Mexican gas station, and show you our new best friend - Oxxo. Finding good gas stations, convenience stores, and washrooms have become very important on this drive to Central America, and Mexico has some great options for these! Unfortunately, what Mexico doesn't have so far are good roads, and we are constantly dodging pot holes, people, speed bumps, and animals. We cover a lot less distance each day than we did when we were driving through Canada and the USA, but there's never a dull moment!
We got so lucky with an epic beach visit just before arriving into Mazatlan. We wanted a spot to let Evie off leash and enjoy chasing the ball, and man did Mexico deliver! A huge benefit of having our own vehicle is getting to discover hidden gems like this beach. We just saw a road on Google maps that seemed to lead to the beach, and we ended up in paradise! The car has a few new scratches, but we bought a 2008 for a reason 😉
After 9 long days of driving, we finally arrive in Mazatlan!!! This is our first proper stop on this road trip to Central America, and we are so excited to tuck into Mexico properly once we've gotten settled. In the next video, we'll finally be off the road and exploring Mazatlan. We hope to see you there!

    Your frantic road trip south was exhausting even for us arm chair followers, so don’t dare think there will be any boredom in Like Button clickers as you slow down to smell the burritos. We are not here for the Amazing Race, just to visit you guys: see how you are doing. You’ve been sharing well filmed scenery and a feel for amazing places all over the world. But seeing you home among family and then go through a wrenching health scare brought this point home to us. The reason to “hit that subscribe button is U2 period. As you immortalize and share this part of your lives. Not to mention the unmentioned but oh so obvious happiness you both BEAM as a couple. These are at the heart of the sincere vignettes you put out each week. Feel the support in return and watch them potholes! ❤

    Try to see it as opportunities to give back. You are blessed in life to live how you do... many are not so fortunate. The universe is giving you opportunities to give back and you are refusing. It may seem like some service you do not need or some tat you do not want... yet it may keep someone fed for another day, etc. Such small gestures of kindness will further bless you both also.

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico 4 дні тому

      We've started handing out food quite often as there are lots of opportunities to help kids and families that way here in Mexico. Through our travels we have learned that giving money to kids is often really harmful as it can contribute to child trafficking and exploitation. We've learned that giving food is safer, as traffickers/exploiters cannot take advantage of kids as easily if all they're bringing in is apples and tacos. It's hard to imagine, but we've actually had kids turn down our offer of food before, and that's a sure sign they are being trafficked/exploited as their "employers" want money, not perishable items. It's a tough line to tread, but we always try to do things as ethically as possible on our travels.

    • @WG223
      @WG223 3 дні тому

    How do you keep your stuff in the car safe? Do you cover it and when you check in, do you remove everything out? Also do you have Canadian plates?

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico 4 дні тому

      We sure do have Canadian plates. We wish we could make them look Mexican somehow to blend in better, but we're stuck with them. For the car, we make sure that anytime we stop somewhere to eat or let Evie out, we park the car in a spot where we'll be able to see the car. We've also blacked out the windows in the back and we drape a blanket over all our belongings when we get out to eat/grab coffee, just so you can't see exactly what's in there if someone were to try to peak in. It's stressful though for sure to have all our stuff in one place. We have to be really careful!

    3 things #1use wool wash for all your clothing, all the tech stuff will last longer. Not Woolite. You often don't need to rinse if you buy one of the good ones. If you can't find it at a regular grocery store, try a knitting shop or craft store. #2 Learn to Darn. It is important just like being able to sew on a button. #3 In Italy you have to carry your passport all the time, you will get fined if you don't have it on you.
